STARS is a summer day program offered by the Foundation for rising seventh grade
students in all six DCS middle schools. The expense-paid program was begun in 1995.
Located on the campus of Davidson County Extended Day School, the weeklong program provides opportunities for students to build skills in decision-making, self-confidence, leadership, community responsibility and cooperation.
Applications go out to middle schools each year in April or May. Guidance counselors work with students they think have high potential and could best benefit from the STARS experience. A DCEF selection committee extends invitations to invited participants before the end of school. STARS is held in late July each year (see "Upcoming Events" on the home page).
DCEF employs a director to oversee general academy operations. Staff members are present to bring leadership to small and large group activities, individual conferencing, goal-setting and daily evaluation of activities.
Having middle school staff present at camp has proven to be a very valuable part of the academy program. Then, during the following school year, the staff member continues to communicate with STARS participants from their school to reinforce lessons learned at camp. It is this consistency that keeps the lessons learned during STARS fresh in the minds of these young adolescents.
Transportation to and from academy is provided for STARS participants. The week’s activities include on and off-campus activities.
STARS has received rave reviews from participants and their parents. This program truly inspires Students Teaching And Reaching for Success!
The 2008 STARS Academy will be help on July 28th thru August 1st at the Davidson County Extended Day School.
