The Bernard H. Thomas Student Leadership Academy is held in June (see "Upcoming Events" on the home page) at the Davidson County Community College. The Academy offers students within the Davidson County School System an opportunity to develop and use leadership skills during an exciting week of special classes and projects. Academy leaders emphasize skill development in the areas of self-awareness, listening, speaking, writing, team building, decision-making, problem solving, goal-setting and conflict resolution. Academy graduates are prepared to take leadership roles in their individual schools and communities.

Students from each school (rising 5th - 9th) in the Davidson County School System will be selected based on their application form and the recommendation of their teacher(s). Students may attend the Academy one time in each of the following two levels: First Level (rising 5th & 6th graders), Second Level (rising 7th, 8th, & 9th graders). Students are eligible to apply if they have not previously attended the Academy at the level to which they are currently applying. Applications must be completed by the student in his or her own handwriting and submitted to your local school guidance counselor.

In 2008 and 2009, the DCEF partnered with Old Dominion Freight Line, Inc of Thomasville by sponsoring the academy. There is no cost to the students. Lunches and an Academy t-shirt will be provided. Participation for all five days of the Academy is mandatory with classes beginning at 8:30 am and ending at 3:00 pm. Transportation to and from Davidson County Community College will not be provided and parents are responsible for insurance. All classes will originate and end at Davidson County Community College but may involve some activities away from campus for which transportation will be provided. The Davidson County Education Foundation expresses our sincere appreciation to Old Dominion Freight Line for their generous involvement in the Leadership Academy for the past 2 years.

Students will be notified by mail of the status of their applications in late May. Parents are invited to attend a closing ceremony on Friday afternoon at 2:00 pm on the DCCC campus.
